Greetings -
I have a preserve for you today, that my family has had more fun with probably than any other preserve in our lives.
It all came about because of all the many pictures we'd taken of our children through their childhoods.
There they sat, behind closed pages of a binder, looked at only now and then, pretty sad.
There were so many favorite pictures in those binders, that it was a shame that we couldn't enjoy them more often....sooooo I decided to go through all the books, take out all the favorite pictures of each child through their growing up years and organize them into a collage and frame them.
I dated the backs of each photo for the future return to where they belonged if I ever decided to update the preserve as time went on.
I purchased mat board in a color that would go with our decor, and also ordered frames and plexi-glass from americanframe.com (the best & least expensive framing supply store I've come across). I cut each whole sheet of mat board in half (lengthwise) for each preserve. They still are pretty big even at that size...but, we had LOTS of favorite pictures! You can use any size mat board that you want, so don't think you have to go as big as we did.
I wanted to temporarily attach the photos to the mat board, so I just used regular scotch or masking tape and attached them chronologically.
They may not be a designer's definition of good decorating, but as far as "fun times" with the fam, walking down memory lane - it can't be beat. We NEVER get tired of laughing over special pictures and remembering the circumstances revolving around each. Visitors are able to enjoy or avoid at their leisure/discretion without having to be a captive audience. We only have one area in the house where family pictures are on display - thus keeping the family pride down to a "dull roar" and only in one area.
So, this preserve may be just what the doctor ordered for some family fun times AND a sure-fire way to help instill in your children a feeling of belonging, appreciation, love, and identity by all the other family members.
Give it a try - well worth the effort.
Here are examples of our preserves - We are on our second set of FAVORITE pictures, as ten years have passed since our first preserve and updating was sorely needed.
CAUTION - do try to keep photos out of direct sunlight - they will discolor and fade.
HAPPY PRESERVING!
