One of the Best Ideas (Someone Else Gave Me)

YOUR CREATIONS PRESERVE

This history is one of my VERY FAVES!
It is a preservation of everything you've ever made.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN? You query...
Do you craft, sew, sculpt, paint, draw, build, photograph, needlework,decorate...
DO YOU CREATE in any way, shape of form?
I'll bet you do!
Have you ever thought of documenting the items that you've created by photographing them?
Do you have something to show for all the time, effort and talent that you've put into all those projects...all those many gifts you've made and given away all these years?
What you've created is in part a history of you.  You are in each one of those creations and taking a quick picture of each item you create (even photography) and preserving it in a collection (either physically, or digitally) is a REALLY IMPORTANT THING TO DO!
Here are samples of things I've created that I've recorded by photo.
Seriously, looking through this history brings back so many memories about the people they were created for, and the times I lived in during their creation.  Fun Stuff!

The left picture is of items I've created...
The right picture has samples of photography I've taken.

  1. Your new blog is very timely for me! Not working now and reveling in the time I have to think of things like Family History, Genealogy, Home Movies, and maybe actually putting pictures in my empty photo frames :)

I like this thought about preserving our creations. I've been surprised to find that my favourite at work accomplishment doesn't have anything to do with spreadsheets or management systems I created but instead I love remembering the Christmas Party invitations I made every year for five years! Lol. So, I think I'm going to make a portfolio of invitations and ward bulletins.

I also like your no nonsense, clean lined approach.

  2. I love Drew's face, that's the reason for the "funny" reaction. But the blog is very helpful. I have bought a binder and page protectors this week. I have a box of invitations, movie tickets etc. that I am excited to put together. Thanks for the great ideas!

  3. Hi Mrs. Barnett! It's Nikki :) Just stumbled upon this from Hilary's blog and thought I would check it out. I really love these ideas. I too am a hopeless scrapbooker- I've documented everything from high school, college, engagement, wedding, pregnancy, birth of my first son, his first year, and now starting on our home book. I hope that someday my son will appreciate all the work it has taken. I look forward to many more projects :)

PICTURE BOOKS PRESERVE I have had a lot of fun creating family picture books using the website ARTSCOW.COM (thanks to my daughterinlaw Season!) I know there are a lot of sites & stores that you can get your pictures put into a bound book format, however, I have found artscow.com very reasonable (when you take advantage of their often offered discounts &/or free shipping).  The quality is also the best. It has become, for me another method of preserving the tons of pictures that I acquire - I love capturing shots while Skyping with family, especially the g-kids! I always order 2 of the finished book, one for me and one for them. I feel strongly about preserving one's life in many forms, and as I feel like my children grew up with a strong sense of self and who they were, and where they fit in our family and in this life, I am convinced that this is a vehicle that provides that. Here is a sampling of a few books I've made at this website. Enjoy. http://www...

LOVE LETTERS

Going through some of the kid's scrapbooks not too long ago while looking for something, I came across a number of letters that I'd written to each child. A lot were written during the early months of their life, chronicling their achievements and the dates of the big events. As they grew, the letters became further apart. Mostly on their birthday - I'd write as many achievements, adventures, events, talents, and interests that I could think of that made up their past year. I thought to myself that I would like a copy of those letters to keep for myself in a little preserve as they represented all the above listed items, but especially my love for them and how I felt about them at that time. You may already have done / are doing this small act, and will in time realize the importance that it is. But if you haven't started yet, do so while they are young and your thoughts are fresh in your mind. I'm sure you can attest to the fact that details quickly fad...
